June 27, 2007 After a decade in power, Tony Blair resigned from his position as prime minister on Wednesday and will be heading for a new role in the Middle East with the Quartet of Mideast peace mediators. Blair used his final weekly question session to apologize for the perils faced by British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, but did not apologize for backing the United States in using military force. The former prime minister concluded his remarks by “wish[ing] everyone - friend or foe- well. And that is that. The end.” Blair left the House of Commons amidst much applause and cheering. He will be succeeded by Treasury chief Gordon Brown. |
